St Patrick's Night in the Voodoo Lounge - Jazz Review
By Bill Dickinson
Mama Liz`s Voodoo Lounge hosted the first jazz session on St Patrick`s night with a visit from an international band, The New Orleans Z`Hulus. The event attracted an enthusiastic audience from as far afield as Derby, Nottingham, Cambridge and Northampton – although sadly only six people from Stamford – who were treated to an evening of superb jazz from a band of musicians who are world renowned for their expertise in playing New Orleans style music.
The repertoire ranged from the diverse genre of the music, popular song, blues , spirituals, rags, marches and jazz standards with the odd Spanish tinged tune – the latin influence has always been a part of jazz - thrown in for good measure.
The world famous musicians, all experts in their field of music are on a tour of the south of England and comprise Dan Vercruysse (Belgium) trumpet, Phillipe De Smet (Belgium) trombone, John Defferrary (Germany) clarinet, Brian Turnock (England) bass, Emile Van Pelt (Netherlands) piano and due to the untimely illness of the band leader and drummer Maurice Van Eyck the inclusion of the highly respected virtuoso English drummer Colin Bowden, their next gig, Thursday, being Amersham Jazz Club.
Much credit must go to all at Mama Liz`s for working tirelessly to put this event together which was received with enthusiasm and appreciation in the atmospheric Voodoo lounge, a truly wonderful venue for musical functions - ( someone even remarked that it was reminiscent of Liverpool`s `Cavern` ) – it is the intension to promote further jazz concerts at irregular intervals, the next one being by Mardi Gras on a date be announced so keep your eyes on this website for further information or click >>here<< to join the mailing list. |
